byproducts: NaNH4P2O6; absolute dry NH4I, NaI and P2O5 mixed, vessel evacuated; water previously cooled with alcohol-carbondioxide distills over and initiates reaction without rise of temp.; HI washed with saturated HI-soln. free of iodine, remaining iodine and main amount of water removed in a tube cooled to -40°C, dried by P2O5; gives very pure, condensable gaseous HI;;
