aluminium in solid Ln2O3, AlBr3 (Ln:Al = 1:4) and Al powder were placed into an one-end sealed quartz tube under Ar, sealed under vac., heated at 600 K for 1 h; sealed tube was placed in a tubular furnace with a reduced temp. gradient from 750 to 460 K, vapor transport reaction for 6 h, tube was quicklyremoved from the furnace, the hot end was quenched with water, AlBr3 wa s condensed;

in neat (no solvent) byproducts: H2, NH3; excess NH4Br, heating under Ar (310°C, 3 d), then in vac. (400°C); sublimation (vac., 800°C);

in hydrogen bromide oxide dissoln. in dil HBr (1:3), soln. evapn. until crystn. occured; crystals sepn. from mother liquor, drying (vac. desiccator, over CaCl2, P2O5 and alkali) to const. mass;

in hydrogen bromide aq. HBr; Y2O3 dissolved in concd. HBr; addn. of solid NH4Br (n(NH4Br):n(Y2O3) approx. 15), addn. of 10 ml concd. HBr, heating to near dryness, cooling, ground; transferred to a quartz tube with a side arm, evacuation to ca. 10 Pa, heated to 373 K for 15-18 h, then temp. rise to 673 K (sublimation of NH4Br), then temp. rise to 1223 K (sublimation of YBr3); elem. anal.;
