soln. of (E)-2-butene (64.6 mmol,THF) was treated with KO-t-Bu (58.9 mmol) and n-BuLi (58.9 mmol) (hexane, -78°C, Ar); heating to -50°C for 15 min, recooling; addn. of FB(OMe)2 (74 mmol) and pinacol (66.8 mmol) in CH2Cl2; mixt. was concd. in vacuo, distn. at 68-76°C (7 mm Hg) gave product (96percent isomeric purity);
